Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated Team Lagos on their historic triumph at the 9th National Youth Games, describing the feat as proof of the state’s growing dominance in youth sports.
The Games, held in Asaba, Delta State, concluded with Team Lagos finishing top of the medals table after a record haul of 110 medals – 52 gold, 32 silver and 26 bronze.
It was the state’s first time winning the overall title, underscoring its rising investment in grassroots sports development.

In a social media post on Sunday, Sanwo-Olu praised the athletes, coaches and the Lagos State Sports Commission for their dedication and hard work.
“I am immensely proud of Team Lagos for their outstanding performance at the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, where they finished first on the medals table with a total of 110 medals: 52 gold, 32 silver and 26 bronze,” he wrote.
The governor added that the achievement went beyond medals, noting it showcased the talent and potential of Lagos youths.
“Our young athletes, together with their coaches and the Lagos State Sports Commission, have made history and demonstrated the strength of Lagos in sports,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu also announced plans to host the victorious contingent in the coming days to celebrate their success.
The defending champions, Team Delta, finished second despite securing the highest medal tally overall with 114 medals – 37 gold, 38 silver and 39 bronze.
Edo State, which held second place until the final day, came third with 79 medals, comprising 33 gold, 18 silver and 28 bronze.

In total, 33 states won medals at the Games, producing 802 medals altogether: 246 gold, 236 silver and 320 bronze.
Team Lagos’ breakthrough is widely viewed as a major shift in the balance of power in Nigerian youth sports, positioning the state as an emerging force to watch.
