Last year’s Met Gala was a runway of dreams with its dress code as the Garden of Time. However for the Met Gala 2025, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the dress code for the event in May: “Tailored for You.”
This dress code celebrates the accompanying exhibit, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which focuses on suiting and menswear, particularly Black menswear over the centuries.

This year’s committee boasts a star-studded lineup including athletes Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens, Angel Reese and Sha’Carri Richardson; filmmakers Spike Lee, Tonya Lewis Lee and Regina King; actors Ayo Edebiri, Audra McDonald and Jeremy Pope; musicians Doechii, Usher, Tyla, Janelle Monáe and André 3000; including our very own Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie; artists Jordan Casteel, Rashid Johnson and Kara Walker; playwrights Jeremy O. Harris and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins; and fashion figures Grace Wales Bonner, Edward Enninful, Dapper Dan and Olivier Rousteing.
Celebrity chef Kwame Onwuachi will curate the gala menu. This major fundraiser for the Costume Institute, which raised over $26 million last year, also serves as the launch for the spring exhibit. “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” will run for an extended six months.
Usher commented that the theme is timely and celebrates Black culture. Richardson added that style is more than clothing; it’s about presence and storytelling.
The exhibit explores Black style from the 18th century to today through the lens of dandyism. Miller and Andrew Bolton, the exhibit’s curators, explained that dandyism has historically ranged from precise tailoring to flamboyance.
The show will specifically highlight Black dandyism and how Black individuals have used fashion to shape their identities.Artist Torkwase Dyson will contribute sculptural “architectural zones,” and Iké Udé will curate a section on Julius Soubise, an early Black dandy.
The exhibit, running from May 10 to October 26, 2025, will be divided into 12 sections exploring different facets of the dandy aesthetic, including Ownership, Presence, and Freedom. Other contributing artists include Tanda Francis and Tyler Mitchell.
