Federal authorities have charged 50-year-old Nathalie Rose Jones of Lafayette, Indiana, after she allegedly travelled to Washington, D.C., with the intent to “kidnap and assassinate” President Donald Trump.
In a statement released on August 18, 2025, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said Jones used Facebook and Instagram to post disturbing threats. One of the posts read: “I am willing to sacrificially kill this POTUS by disembowelling him and cutting out his trachea with Liz Cheney and all the Affirmation present.” She also referenced an “arrest and removal ceremony” involving Trump.
How Jones was traced
The U.S. Secret Service opened an investigation after tracing the posts back to Jones. During an interview on August 15, she admitted to making the threats. She told agents she would try to kill Trump “if given the opportunity,” adding that her motivation was to avenge lives lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, she later walked back her statement, saying she no longer intended to harm him.
Jones now faces federal charges for threatening the life of the president and for transmitting interstate communications containing threats to kidnap or injure another person—both offences carrying potential prison terms of up to five years.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro underscored the severity of the allegations, stating: “Threatening the life of the President is one of the most serious crimes and one that will be met with swift and unwavering prosecution.”
Court filings also note that Jones has a history of mental illness, something she acknowledged in her online posts. As of this report, there is no record of her having secured legal counsel.
