Operatives from the Uyo Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 13 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud in the Nwaniba area of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
In a statement posted on its X page, the EFCC reported that the arrests were made on Monday during a sting operation, which was based on credible intelligence regarding the suspects’ involvement in fraudulent online activities.
Among the items recovered were two Lexus 350 saloon cars with registration numbers BGK 698 SU (Abia) and ABC 573 BC, a Toyota Camry V6 with registration number UYY 888 HR (Akwa Ibom), a Toyota Corolla with registration number KTM 613 AA (Akwa Ibom), six laptop computers, and 20 smartphones.
The EFCC confirmed that the suspects will be charged to court upon the completion of investigations.
In a related development, the Benin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC also arrested 15 suspected internet fraudsters in Benin on the same day. Acting on actionable intelligence, the anti-graft agency apprehended the suspects for their alleged involvement in computer-related fraud.
Recovered items from this operation include four luxury vehicles, laptops, and mobile phones. The EFCC further stated that the suspects will face charges as soon as investigations are finalized.
