Millwall head coach Neil Harris will depart the club following Saturday’s match against Middlesbrough. Harris, the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, returned for a second stint in February 2024 and guided the Lions to safety in the Championship. Under his leadership, they finished 13th last season after a difficult start. However, the club has struggled this season, sitting 11th and without a win in four games.
In a statement, Harris expressed his love for the club, stating, “This club is more than a job to me, it’s my club and always will be,” adding that the time felt right to step down. His departure comes after Millwall’s 1-0 loss to Coventry, a game where they failed to register a shot on target.
The club has already begun searching for Harris’ successor, with interim management to be announced after the weekend. Director of football Steve Gallen emphasized that the next head coach would play a pivotal role in executing the club’s strategy. Chairman James Berylson acknowledged Harris’ decision, stressing the importance of aligning the next appointment with the club’s vision.
Harris leaves Millwall in mid-table, six points off the play-off places. Despite the recent struggles, the club remains in a good position under Harris’ stewardship. The search for a new head coach is underway, with names like Mark Robins of Coventry already being linked as a potential replacement.
As Harris prepares for his final games, including Wednesday’s clash with Sheffield United, the club faces the challenge of continuing to build on his foundation for the future.
