A security expert has raised alarm over poor funding of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), saying the situation is weakening its ability to respond to growing security threats across the country.
The Director-General of the Institute for Police and Security Policy Research, Charles Omole, said the police received no capital allocation in 2025 apart from salaries.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Omole said, “From January to December 2025, the police did not receive one kobo of capital budget other than salaries. Nothing was paid to them.”
He questioned how the force could meet public expectations without proper funding with an emphasis on the fact that officers lack the tools and support needed to tackle crime effectively.
Omole cited the special intervention squad introduced by former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, noting that the initiative failed due to lack of funds.

He said, “The idea was to have a team in each zone ready to respond within one hour, but it did not work because it was never funded.”
The analyst also pointed to deeper structural gaps in Nigeria’s security system and made it clear that the country lacks three key elements: intelligence, rapid response, and early warning systems.
He said, “We don’t have any one of the three.”
He noted that while criminal groups infiltrate state institutions, security agencies struggle to penetrate such networks.
His comments come amid renewed public concern over rising attacks and worsening insecurity nationwide, with calls growing for urgent reforms and better funding of security agencies.
