The Federal Government (FG) has approved a change in the route of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to pass through Ogoniland in Rivers State, in honour of the late Senator Mpigi Barinada Barry.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, announced the decision during a night of tribute held on Wednesday in Abuja, where he described the late lawmaker as a committed public servant whose impact went beyond his constituency.
Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District, died recently after years of active involvement in national development. According to Umahi, President Bola Tinubu approved the new route as a mark of respect for the senator’s contributions.
The minister said Mpigi played a key role in resolving issues on major road projects, including the Bodo-Bonny Road and the Eleme-Onne section of the East-West Road in Rivers State.
He noted that the late senator also supported development efforts across several states, including Lagos, Ogun, Sokoto, Kebbi and Kano.
Umahi described him as a man known for integrity and consistency, and added that such qualities are rare in politics.

He said the decision to pass the coastal highway through Ogoniland would stand as a lasting tribute to Mpigi’s legacy.
The minister also assured the family of the government’s support, stating that efforts would continue to sustain the developmental vision the late senator promoted while in office.
He urged Nigerians to reflect on Mpigi’s life and draw lessons from his commitment to service, unity, and national progress.
