Terrorists have attacked military base in Borno State and killed a Brigadier General in Nigeria.
The attack occurred on Thursday overnight in Benisheikh, about 75 kilometres from Maiduguri, where fighters reportedly overran a military formation, killing at least 18 soldiers and setting vehicles ablaze, according to intelligence sources.
The incident comes five months after the killing of Musa Uba, who died in November during an attack linked to Islamic State West Africa Province — one of the splinter factions that emerged from Boko Haram since the insurgency began in 2009.
Kaga Local Government Chairman, Zannah Lawan Ajimi, confirmed the death of the brigade commander, Oseni Braimah, in a phone interview with AFP News.
“Unfortunately, the brigade commander, Brigadier General O.O. Braimah, lost his life,” he said.
Two intelligence sources also corroborated the killing, with one describing the incident as an overrun of the base and estimating the death toll at “at least” 18 personnel.
Security analysts have warned of increasing violence across Nigeria’s north since 2025, with renewed attacks in the northeast and a spread of armed groups into parts of the northwest and north-central regions.
The development follows a recent advisory by the United States Department of State, which authorised non-emergency staff to leave Nigeria, citing a deteriorating security situation.
Meanwhile, New Daily Prime reports that the military has mum on the reported demise of the Brigadier General.
Micheal Onoja, Director of the Defence Media Operations at the Defence Headquarters, however, said terrorists launched a late-night assault on a military base in Borno State on Thursday, leaving an unspecified number of soldiers dead, according to the Defence Headquarters.
