Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday has called on the Nigerian government to protect citizens after a deadly airstrike hit Jilli market in the Borno-Yobe area, killing many traders during a military operation targeted at insurgents.
The airstrike reportedly struck a busy market where civilians had gathered for trade. Many people were killed and others were injured.
The attack has prompted fresh concerns about the safety of civilians during military operations in the North-East.
Reacting to the incident, Atiku said the attack was not only tragic but also a serious failure that should worry every Nigerian.
He stated that innocent citizens were once again harmed while security forces were trying to deal with insurgents.

He questioned how long Nigerians would remain unsafe, both from terrorist attacks and from the operations meant to protect them.
Atiku maintained that the situation shows a need for urgent action by the government.
“The Jilli market airstrike that killed scores of innocent traders is not just tragic, but a devastating failure that must outrage every conscience,” he noted.
Atiku said that the country must begin to place a higher value on human life.
He compared the situation to a recent action by the United States, where strong efforts and resources were used to rescue one citizen.
“Here at home, we must ask: what is the value of Nigerian lives?” he said.
He stressed that the incident should lead to a full review of military operations to avoid future mistakes.
He called for accountability and clear steps to prevent similar tragedies.
“This demands urgent review, accountability, and decisive action to prevent a recurrence,” he said.
Atiku also expressed sympathy for the victims and their families. He said the government has a duty to protect all citizens at all times.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the bereaved families and affected communities. Nigeria must uphold its duty to protect its citizens. That is the ultimate essence of national security,” he said.
