Journalist and former media aide for ex-Vice President, Laolu Akande, has accused Atiku Abubakar of ruining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Akande who spoke during an interview on Friday on Channels Television suggested that Atiku’s decision to ignore the party’s rules on rotating power led to the party’s current problems.
Akande argued that Atiku damaged the foundation of the PDP by going against the “national consensus”.
This consensus was an arrangement that the presidency should move between the North and the South to ensure fairness.

Akande said Atiku assaulted the party’s arrangement, suggesting that this has resulted in what PDP is struggling with today.
He suggested that Atiku cannot claim to be a saviour of democracy when his own actions destroyed the PDP.
Akande responded to recent comments made by Atiku Abubakar. Atiku had allegedly accused President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of trying to turn Nigeria into a “one-party state.”
Akande dismissed such claims as hypocritical.
He said, “We have the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who destroyed the PDP by assaulting the national consensus on rotational presidency. He is now accusing President Bola Tinubu and his party of orchestrating a one-party state in Nigeria.”
Akande, in a direct criticism, stated that Atiku and President Tinubu are not very different from each other.
He noted that both men belong to the same “school of thought” when it comes to politics.
He explained that both leaders often view political power as a tool for personal advantage rather than a way to improve the lives of the citizens.
Akande said, “Both of them belong to the school of thought that sees political power as an end to justifying the need, they just see power as something that is more to their advantage rather than something that is meant to transform the lives of the people.”
While Akande criticised Atiku’s role in the PDP’s decline, he also noted concerns about the current administration.
He mentioned that under Tinubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has acted in ways that make people doubt its neutrality.
However, what seemed to be his main message was that Nigerians should stop following the “partisan narratives” of these politicians and focus on the future of the country.
