Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello appealed to President Bola Tinubu on September 25, urging intervention in his ongoing dispute with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC has accused Bello of money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation, with allegations totaling N80.2 billion.
In a statement released by Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, the former governor claimed that the EFCC’s actions were intended to humiliate him. He called for an investigation into the agency’s motives, asserting that ulterior motives may drive them.
Bello is facing a court order to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja. He contends that the charges are politically motivated, stating, “Former Governor Yahaya Bello remains innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of jurisdiction.”
Michael also expressed gratitude to the Kogi State House of Assembly for its support and emphasized that many Nigerians are recognizing the EFCC’s “desperation” to tarnish Bello’s reputation. He urged the EFCC to acknowledge that the former governor is not guilty of the allegations against him until a court ruling is made.
As the situation unfolds, Bello’s appeal highlights ongoing concerns regarding the integrity of the EFCC and the implications of politically charged investigations.
