Governor Ademola Adeleke has explained his decision to instruct the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to ban heavy-duty trucks from using the Olaiya bridge in the state capital.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor cited safety concerns based on technical reports regarding the condition of the bridge.

He emphasised that the move was necessary to prevent potential damage to the structure and avoid any unforeseen incidents due to the continuous passage of heavy trucks.

During a security council meeting in Osogbo, Governor Adeleke described the decision as a preemptive measure to protect the bridge.

He further directed the Ministry to erect barricades, restricting access to cars and buses only.

Additionally, the governor called for a public sensitization campaign, instructing the Ministry to release a travel advisory and use radio jingles to inform the public and the transport sector about the new restrictions.

Governor Adeleke reassured the public that the measure was aimed at safeguarding both citizens and state infrastructure, while a comprehensive review of the bridge’s technical status is being carried out by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
