A tragic incident cast a shadow over the annual Christmas procession in Gombe State on Wednesday when a vehicle rammed into participants, leaving many injured.
The unfortunate event occurred near the Women’s Centre, opposite Orji Estate, along the busy Gombe-Bauchi expressway.
The Christmas procession, a cherished tradition among the Christian community in Gombe, sees participants pay homage to the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Abubakar, and Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
The incident disrupted what was intended to be a joyous occasion as participants from Tumfure made their way to the Emir’s ground.
The Gombe State Police Command has confirmed the incident, emphasizing that it was not premeditated.
According to the Gombe State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the accident involved a Sharon vehicle that was reportedly overloaded with grains, including several bags placed precariously on the rooftop.
Addressing rumours circulating on social media, which described the incident as a massacre, DSP Abdullahi urged the public to exercise caution in their interpretations.
“I think what happened was an accident. The Sharon vehicle involved was overloaded with grains. On the rooftop, it had bags of grains. To say it’s a massacre means it was a deliberate attempt,” he explained, seeking to dispel misinformation about the tragic event.
Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted moments of panic and confusion as the vehicle lost control and ploughed into the procession. Many of the injured were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment, though the extent of their injuries has not been disclosed at the time of this report.
The annual Christmas procession is a significant cultural and religious event in Gombe State, drawing participants and spectators from across the region. The disruption caused by the accident has sparked discussions on the need for enhanced safety measures during such gatherings, particularly along major roadways.
As investigations into the incident continue, the Gombe State Police Command has assured the public that it is committed to uncovering the exact circumstances that led to the accident.
The driver of the vehicle, whose identity remains undisclosed, is reportedly in custody, and further updates are expected as inquiries progress.
Meanwhile, community leaders and religious organizations have expressed their solidarity with the victims and their families, urging calm and unity during this challenging time.
They have also called for greater collaboration between authorities and organizers of public events to prevent such occurrences in the future.
This tragic accident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of vigilance and preparation when planning large-scale events.
As Gombe State comes to terms with this unfortunate incident, the focus remains on providing support to the injured and ensuring the safety of future processions.
The Christmas season, a time meant for celebration and reflection, has been marred by this devastating accident. However, the resilience of the Gombe community remains evident as they navigate this difficult moment with compassion and determination.
