UEFA has officially confirmed a rare scenario that could allow the team finishing seventh in the Premier League to qualify for the 2026–27 UEFA Champions League — but only if two major conditions are met.
According to Transfer News Live on X, UEFA’s updated allocation and coefficient system, an extra European Performance Spot could open up beyond the usual five places for English clubs if both:
🔹 Aston Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth or sixth in the Premier League, and
🔹 Liverpool wins the Champions League and finishes fifth or sixth domestically.
Right now, Villa sits fourth in the Premier League standings, while Liverpool is fifth, as the season nears its climax with seven games left.

On the most recent matchday, Villa beat West Ham, ending a three‑game slump and strengthening their position in the top four. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s league form has been patchy, including a loss to Brighton, but they remain in the hunt for European qualification.
In Europe this season, Liverpool have powered into the Champions League quarter-finals, overturning their round‑of‑16 tie with Galatasaray in emphatic fashion with a 4–0 win at Anfield — a result that underlined their continental credentials. Villa’s campaign in the Europa League has seen them reach the quarter‑finals, keeping alive their chance of lifting Europe’s second‑tier crown.
If both clubs go on to win their respective European competitions, and each also finishes outside the standard top four in the league, UEFA’s rules could cascade extra places down the domestic table, potentially rewarding the seventh‑placed team with a Champions League spot something never seen before.
