Tragedy has struck Akungba community, host of Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State, following the death of no fewer than eight individuals from truck accident.
According to sources, the accident was caused by Dangote trailer. The trailer was said to have suffered a break failure from Ikare enroute to Akungba.
In 2022, the state government erected barricade on the main gate of the university as a measure to prevent incessant accidents from trailers, following a Dangote cement trailer accident that led to the death of the former university students union president Adesomoju Samuel, and other promising young Nigerians on January 23rd, 2021.
The barricade has however been removed by some community individuals for commercial purposes, information disclosed.
In a press release by the AAUA students union Public Relations Officer, Ajigba Akinbobola, about 10 persons have lost their lives due to this tragic incident.
The union added it “made several efforts to ensure that trucks stop plying akungba roads as it can cause danger to the lives and properties of our students and still remain resolute in the assurance of this struggle.”
The university student union “implore students to remain and fearless as we are up to the task of maintaining peace and order within the students community and as well to stay away from the highway for the time being.”
