Vice-President Kashim Shettima has delivered the condolences of President Bola Tinubu to the people and government of Kwara State following the deadly attacks on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaima Local Government Area.
The communities were reportedly attacked on February 3 by suspected members of an Islamist group known as Lakurawa, leaving several residents dead and properties destroyed.
Speaking on Saturday during a condolence visit to the state, Shettima described the killings as tragic and deeply disturbing, noting that the victims were law-abiding citizens going about their legitimate means of livelihood.
He said the affected communities had long been known for practising peaceful and tolerant forms of Islam, stressing that the violence was completely at odds with their history, culture and religious traditions.
“Please accept our heartfelt condolences on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Shettima said.
“Our prayers are with you, and our empathy is with the affected families and communities.”
The Vice-President disclosed that the Federal Government had deployed a battalion of the Nigerian Army to the area to stabilise the security situation, assuring residents that decisive steps were being taken to restore peace.
He also said President Tinubu had directed the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency to work with the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency to deliver relief materials and humanitarian assistance to those affected.
Shettima further prayed for the souls of those killed and asked God to grant their families the strength to bear the loss.
Responding, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq thanked the President and Vice-President for what he described as a prompt and reassuring intervention by the Federal Government.
The governor said additional security operatives, including troops from the Nigerian Army’s 2 Division, had been deployed to the affected communities, while officials of NEMA were already on ground to assess the humanitarian situation and provide support.
Abdulrazaq expressed confidence that continued prayers and collective national efforts would improve security across the country, and urged Nigerians to keep supporting the President and the nation’s leadership.
