President Bola Tinubu is set to deliver a nationwide broadcast on Wednesday, 1 October, to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.
A statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the broadcast will go live at 7 a.m.
Titled “2025 Independence Anniversary: President Tinubu Addresses The Nation,” the statement urged all television, radio stations, and electronic media outlets to join the Nigerian Television Authority and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria for the broadcast.
Independence Day speeches traditionally offer Nigerian presidents an opportunity to review the state of the nation, highlight achievements, outline policy directions, and reassure citizens of the government’s commitment to national unity.
In his maiden Independence Day address in 2023, Tinubu focused on economic reforms, the removal of fuel subsidies, and efforts to tackle insecurity. His 2024 speech called for patience from Nigerians, assuring that the sacrifices demanded by reforms would yield long-term benefits.
This year’s broadcast is expected to cover the administration’s progress in economic recovery, security operations, and ongoing infrastructure projects, while reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence from Britain on 1 October 1960.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has commemorated its independence annually with official ceremonies, presidential speeches, and parades.
