President Bola Tinubu has condoled with the government and people of India over the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Singh died yesterday at the age of 92.
Tinubu in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Singh as a distinguished leader whose contributions to India’s development and the strengthening of Nigeria-India relations will remain significant.
Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, paid a visit to Nigeria in 2007, during which he addressed a joint session of the National Assembly—a rare honour accorded to select global leaders.
Tinubu highlighted the enduring impact of the Strategic Partnership between Nigeria and India established during Singh’s tenure.
This partnership, he said, has continued to drive political and economic progress for both nations.
The Nigerian leader also lauded Singh’s efforts in fostering cooperation in areas such as defence, trade, culture, education, health, science and technology, and ICT.
He noted that the former Prime Minister’s role in advancing India’s economic reforms during challenging global times was a testament to his visionary leadership.
The president further described Singh as a selfless leader and a renowned economist and prayed that the late Prime Minister’s legacy would inspire future generations of Indians to continue his commitment to service.
