Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday officially inaugurated Olatunji Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police during a ceremony held at the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja.
The swearing-in formalised Disu’s appointment as the head of the Nigeria Police Force, following his earlier confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council. The event was attended by senior government officials, security chiefs and members of the Federal Executive Council.
Disu’s elevation comes at a time of heightened security challenges across the country, including incidents of kidnapping, banditry and communal violence. Observers say his appointment signals the administration’s intention to strengthen policing structures and enhance internal security nationwide.
In brief remarks at the ceremony, President Tinubu charged the new Inspector-General with upholding professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights in the discharge of his duties. The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to comprehensive security sector reforms aimed at improving public safety and restoring confidence in law enforcement institutions.
Disu, who becomes the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, pledged to serve with integrity and dedication. He assured Nigerians that under his leadership, the police would prioritise community engagement, intelligence-led operations and improved welfare for officers.
The new police chief is expected to accelerate ongoing reforms within the force, including strengthening internal oversight mechanisms and enhancing collaboration with other security agencies. His tenure is also likely to focus on modernising operational capabilities and reinforcing discipline within the ranks.
Security analysts have noted that the coming months will be critical in determining the effectiveness of the new leadership, particularly as the country prepares for future electoral cycles and continues to confront complex security threats.
With his formal inauguration completed, Disu now assumes full constitutional authority as Inspector-General, tasked with steering the Nigeria Police Force through a period of reform and renewed public scrutiny.
