President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to promoting dialogue, reconciliation, and healing among the diverse ethnic nationalities that form the fabric of our great nation.
In a message commemorating the 2024 Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day, President Tinubu, through his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, expressed solidarity with the National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) and the entire Ogoni community.
He emphasised the importance of honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the interests of the Ogoni nation.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “After Price, Comes Prise,” the President noted that it underscores Nigeria’s shared resolve to confront the pains of the past while drawing valuable lessons to shape a brighter, more unified future.
“We honour their memory by recognising the sacrifices made and pledging to strive for a future characterised by peace, justice, and sustainable development for all communities, particularly those in the Niger Delta,” said President Tinubu.
The President further emphasized his commitment to addressing long-standing grievances while fostering a united and prosperous nation for future generations.
He asserted that this vision would be achieved through constructive dialogue and a foundation of mutual respect.
“Oil was explored in Ogoniland for many years. The struggles of Ogoni leaders to protect their environment from harmful oil exploration were met with severe repression, culminating in the tragic execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other leaders in 1995.
“As we remember the Ogoni Martyrs, let us honour their legacy by committing to a future where such injustices are no longer tolerated and where the voices of all Nigerians are heard and respected”, President Tinubu said.
