Tinubu hails new Olubadan Ladoja as ‘rare gem’ at coronation

President Bola Tinubu celebrated the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday, describing the new monarch as a “rare gem in history.”

The President attended the ceremony in Ibadan and praised the former governor for his resilience and reliability throughout his public life.

“Today is an exciting day. It’s a great honour to witness your coronation, to witness history,” the President said.

He recalled their shared time in the Senate and the monarch’s political struggles, including his impeachment battle while he was the governor of Oyo State.

Tinubu offered a prayer that Oba Ladoja would enjoy a long reign and be remembered as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated leaders.

During the ceremony, Tinubu provided an update on the nation’s financial status, declaring, “Today I am honoured and proud to give you cheering news that the economy has turned the corner.”

The President also thanked the people of Ibadan for their support during the 2023 elections, describing his visit as a joyful “homecoming.”

The coronation reached its peak when Governor Seyi Makinde presented Oba Ladoja with the staff of office.

The new Olubadan was crowned after fulfilling traditional rites, including receiving the Akoko leaf and the crown at the Ose Meji Temple.

The colorful ceremony drew a host of dignitaries, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Ọlaoye.

Several former governors, such as Donald Duke, Ibikunle Amosun, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, were also in attendance.

The event was secured by operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army, ensuring a seamless experience.

The Olubadan stool is widely respected for its distinct and systematic succession structure, where chiefs ascend through established ranks.
