President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her unanimous re-election as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The Nigerian economist, known for her expertise in global finance and development, will begin her second four-year term on September 1, 2025, following the expiration of her first term on August 31, 2025.
Okonjo-Iweala, who made history in 2021 as the first African and the first woman to lead the 164-member organisation, was reappointed due to her strong track record and the trust placed in her by the global community.
President Tinubu in a statement by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga praised her leadership, noting that her reappointment underscores international confidence in her ability to drive multilateral trade initiatives for sustainable global development.
He expressed optimism that her continued stewardship would further enhance the WTO’s role as a cornerstone of inclusive economic growth and governance.
Highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to multilateral trade frameworks, Tinubu reaffirmed the country’s support for the WTO, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
