President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, to lead a federal government delegation to Jigawa following a devastating fire in Majia town on Tuesday night that resulted in the loss of over 100 lives.
According to a statement on Wednesday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the delegation includes the Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar; Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali; Corps Marshal of the Federal Roads Safety Commission (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed; and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North West), Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai.
The team will assess the situation at the incident site and visit those injured in local hospitals.
Additionally, President Tinubu directed that emergency assistance—including medical supplies, food, and shelter—be provided to the 50 victims currently receiving treatment, as well as to others affected by the fire.
With a heavy heart, President Tinubu extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims.
He expresses heartfelt prayers and support for the government and people of Jigawa during this difficult time, praying for divine comfort for the bereaved families and for the souls of the departed to rest in peace.
The President also reassured the nation that the government, in collaboration with state authorities, is committed to a thorough and prompt review of fuel transportation safety protocols across the country.
He reiterated his directive to the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) to enhance measures for night travel, including increased patrols and stricter enforcement of safety regulations.
Furthermore, President Tinubu emphasised that those found responsible for violations of safety standards will be held accountable, reaffirming the government’s unwavering commitment to preventing such incidents in the future.
