The Sultanate Council in Sokoto has issued a call to all Muslims across Nigeria to begin the search for the new moon of Jumadal Ula 1447 AH on the evening of Tuesday, 21 October 2025, corresponding to the 29th day of Rabi’ul Assani 1447 AH.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto, on Monday.
According to the statement, the moon sighting marks the beginning of a new lunar month in the Islamic calendar, which plays a key role in determining religious activities and observances.
“Muslims are enjoined to begin the search for the new moon on Tuesday evening and report any sighting to the nearest district or village head,” the council urged.
Sightings are to be reported to His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
The council emphasised the importance of fulfilling this religious obligation with sincerity and dedication.
“May Allah (SWT) help us in the discharge of this religious duty, amen,” Professor Junaidu added.
The Islamic lunar calendar, which consists of 12 months, is used to guide the observance of important religious events such as Ramadan, Eid, and the Hajj pilgrimage. The beginning of each month is marked by the sighting of the new moon.
Muslim communities across the country are therefore expected to actively participate in the moon sighting effort and submit accurate reports through the appropriate religious and traditional channels.
