The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed serious concerns about the uncoordinated distribution of palliatives and relief items across the country during the festive period.
In a statement issued by the Police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP’s warning was prompted by stampedes reported in Abuja, Anambra, and Ibadan, Oyo State.
Describing the situation as worrisome, Egbetokun called for urgent action to safeguard citizens’ lives, particularly vulnerable groups such as youths and the elderly.
He stressed the dangers posed to public safety by these unregulated distributions and funfairs organized by groups, individuals, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
He warned that such events increase the risk of stampedes and other incidents that could result in loss of life.
The IGP pointed out that the absence of well-structured plans for distributing palliatives has led to chaos, long queues, and unnecessary confrontations among citizens seeking aid.
He urged government officials, community leaders, and NGOs to collaborate in creating a comprehensive and organised framework for palliative distribution.

Egbetokun also cautioned organisers of such events to ensure the involvement of security agencies, emphasising that negligence in this regard is a criminal offense under Section 196 of the Penal Code and Section 344 of the Criminal Code, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Furthermore, he advised members of the public to prioritise their safety during these distributions and to exercise caution to avoid unforeseen tragedies.
Reiterating the police’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at ensuring safe and structured palliative distributions, Egbetokun emphasised the importance of collaboration with relevant stakeholders to prevent future incidents and improve the overall process.
The IGP directed the Commissioners of Police in the affected states to conduct thorough investigations into the recent incidents for appropriate legal action.
He also extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
