Nigeria Vice President Kashim Shettima, has said that the new tax reform law will improve the standard of living and reduced hardship among its citizens.
Shettima, who spoke at the State House in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Wednesday, debunked claims from critics that the policies would hurt the needy.
He explained that the reforms were set up to help stop the problem of many different taxes and charges that currently burden small businesses and low-income earners.
According to him, the plan was made to reduce poverty and make life easier for all Nigerians. He addressed a group of government officials and implored them to defend the government’s actions.
Shettima noted that some people are wrongly claiming the tax changes will negatively affect the poor. He stressed that these claims are not true and encouraged officials to educate the public with the facts.
He maintained that the administration is working on policies to bring people out of poverty without adding burdens to them. He also listed some successes of the current economic reforms. These are the increase in foreign exchange reserves and the removal of the fuel subsidy. He said the subsidy had only benefited a few people for a long time while draining the country’s money.
Shettima noted that President Bola Tinubu should be lauded for fixing economic issues that past leaders avoided. He likewise maintained that although the fuel subsidy removal was challenging, it was necessary for the country to have resources for development. He claimed that because of these tough choices, “the economy has bounced back”.
Finally, Shettima urged all government representatives to be more active in sharing the administration’s achievements and to speak out against false information spread by opposition groups.
