Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a prominent leader of Afenifere.

The New Daily Prime earlier that Adebanjo died on Friday at the age of 96. 

The Vice President in his tribute described Adebanjo as a steadfast advocate for a more equitable and progressive Nigeria.

Reflecting on Adebanjo’s immense contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, he highlighted his role as Organizing Secretary of the Action Group and his leadership in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during the military era. 

The Vice President emphasised that Adebanjo’s life was marked by his unwavering commitment to the nation’s progress.

“Pa Adebanjo was a living bridge that connected us to the foundational struggles of our democracy. 

“His voice remained resolute and principled until his final days, always advocating for a more equitable and progressive Nigeria,” Shettima stated.

Shettima further honoured Adebanjo as one of the greatest titans in Nigeria’s political history, noting that his passing marks the end of a vital chapter in the country’s political evolution. 

“In African tradition, when such an elder transitions, a significant part of our history departs with them. Pa Adebanjo was one of those great titans,” he said.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to Adebanjo’s family, especially his 94-year-old wife, Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, expressing hopes for strength and fortitude in the face of this profound loss.
