The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has firmly dismissed rumours suggesting he is seeking the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling such reports false and distracting.
A statement issued by Akume’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, on Thursday, responded to a publication by a national news outlet which named Akume among top politicians allegedly vying for the APC chairmanship.
“The attention of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has been drawn to a publication indicating that he is one of the top politicians jostling for the position of APC National Chairman. To the best of our knowledge, this statement is nothing but a fabrication meant to distract the SGF from the key responsibilities entrusted to him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement read.

Senator Akume reiterated that he is not contesting for any party post, including the APC National Chairmanship, emphasising that his focus remains on delivering the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda within the stipulated timeframe.
“While there may be qualified candidates in the North-Central region should the party zone the position there, my priority is to fast-track national development rather than engage in internal party politics,” Akume stated.
He also affirmed his commitment to his current role, saying, “I am not in a hurry to abdicate my responsibility. Whatever God plans for you will surely come to pass. I am not interested in a race I am not contesting.”
Akume expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the trust placed in him and stressed the need for Nigerians to benefit from the true dividends of democracy.
The Office of the SGF called on media practitioners to uphold ethical journalism, especially when reporting on sensitive political issues that could heighten tensions.
“We urge journalists to verify facts before publication and engage with the Office of the SGF for accurate information,” the statement concluded.
