Seven of 12 inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, following a prison break in the early hours of Monday have been recaptured.
The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the recapture in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, who said the feat was achieved because the Service swiftly launched a manhunt for the fleeing inmates.
The Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo had earlier disclosed that 12 inmates escaped during the incident.
Thereafter, the acting Controller-General of NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, reacting to the development, swiftly mobilised security personnel in collaboration with sister security agencies and top government officials, including the Senior Special Adviser to the Kogi State governor.
The statement read, “Security forces were deployed to restore order, reinforce security at the facility, and track down the escapees.
“As of this moment, five of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining inmates and bring them to justice.”
The Acting Controller General, Nigeria Correctional Service, Sly Nwakuche, disclosed late Monday, that additionally two escapees have been re-arrested, bringing the number of those returned to seven.
He spoke during a press briefing at the Koton Karfe Correctional Service in Kogi State.
He vowed that the remaining escapees would be apprehended as he called on the public to provide security agencies with all the needed information that would lead to the arrest of all the escaped inmates.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has vowed to work with security agencies to uncover the circumstances surrounding the jailbreak.
