Nigeria’s top military officers have arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, following deadly bomb attacks that killed at least 23 people and injured over 100 others.
President Bola Tinubu had ordered the immediate relocation of the service chiefs to the state to take control of the situation. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, arrived about a day after the directive.
They landed at the Air Force Base in Maiduguri and were received by the Theatre Commander before moving to the headquarters of the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai. The defence chief later inspected a guard of honour.
The military leaders are expected to meet troops on the frontlines, government officials, and other key stakeholders to address the renewed attacks linked to Boko Haram insurgents. Their presence is also aimed at closely monitoring the security situation in the region.
The attacks occurred on Monday evening, when three explosions hit different parts of Maiduguri, including a busy market, the entrance of a major teaching hospital, and a post office area.
The blasts, believed to have been carried out by suicide bombers, caused panic among residents, despite years of relative calm in the city.
The military has warned of a possible rise in such attacks, especially in the final days of Ramadan.
President Tinubu described the incidents as desperate acts by terrorists trying to create fear, insisting that security forces remain in control of the situation.
