The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to direct the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) leadership to immediately halt the intimidation, harassment, and threats against a corps member, Ushie Uguamaye.

Earlier, The New Daily Prime reported that Uguamaye, who is currently serving in Lagos State, criticised President Tinubu’s administration over inflation and economic hardship.

In a video shared on her TikTok account, #talktoraye, on Saturday, she expressed frustration over Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions.

Following the video, NYSC officials allegedly summoned and threatened her. She later claimed in another video that her life was at risk due to her criticism of Tinubu’s government.

In response, SERAP, in a statement posted on its X page, warned that it would take legal action against the NYSC if the threats were not immediately withdrawn.

“Everyone has a right to criticize their government without fear of reprisals. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right. We’ll see in court if the threat is not immediately withdrawn.

“The NYSC board should stop treating criticism as a crime and immediately end the intimidation, harassment and threat against Ms Ushie Uguamaye. The administration must direct the NYSC leadership to guarantee her safety and security”, SERAP said.

The SERAP call comes after Amnesty International condemned NYSC for Uguamaye, noting that the corps member has the right to express her discontent peacefully.
