The Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, has called on agencies responsible for traffic regulation to intensify enforcement of road safety measures across Nigeria.
Alli made the appeal following a fatal road accident in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, which claimed the lives of two individuals on Tuesday. The lawmaker stressed that stricter compliance and routine vehicle checks are essential to preventing avoidable deaths on Nigerian roads.
Reacting to the incident, Alli expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the families of the victims. He emphasised that many road accidents could be avoided if traffic regulations were properly enforced and adhered to by motorists.
The senator, who was elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), urged relevant authorities to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and ensure that all vehicles plying the roads meet safety standards.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Alli said, “Relevant authorities must intensify efforts towards ensuring road safety. Regular inspections and strict enforcement of traffic laws are critical to reducing the frequency of these tragic incidents.”
He also appealed directly to drivers, urging them to prioritise safety by adhering strictly to traffic rules and ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey. According to him, responsible driving habits and compliance with safety regulations are key to safeguarding lives.
Road safety remains a significant concern in Nigeria, with accidents often attributed to factors such as reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance, and inadequate enforcement of traffic laws. Alli noted that a coordinated effort between government agencies and road users is necessary to address these challenges effectively.
He further stressed that beyond enforcement, public awareness campaigns should be intensified to educate drivers on the importance of road safety and the consequences of negligence.
The lawmaker concluded by reiterating his commitment to advocating policies that enhance road safety and reduce fatalities, urging all stakeholders to work collectively to make Nigerian roads safer for all users.
