The Senate on Tuesday gave its approval to the appointment of Justice Joseph Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The confirmation came after lawmakers considered and adopted the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central).
While presenting the committee’s findings, Adegbonmire called on the Senate to endorse the nomination of Justice Oyewole, who currently serves on the Court of Appeal.
He said, “That the Senate do Receive and Consider the Report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters on the confirmation of the nomination of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”
President Bola Tinubu had, last Tuesday, formally requested the Senate’s confirmation of Oyewole’s appointment, acting in accordance with Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The letter, which was read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stated: “Pursuant to Section 231 (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Hon. Justice Oyewole Kayode as Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”
Following the reading of the correspondence, Akpabio referred the nomination to the Judiciary Committee for screening and a report. The committee’s work was concluded on Tuesday, paving the way for the Senate’s confirmation.
