Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has paid a moving tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes and active-duty personnel, describing their unwavering service as the “unseen cost” of the nation’s peace and collective freedom.
The governor’s message was delivered on his behalf by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin yesterday during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service.
Held at the Chapel of Christ the Light in Alausa, the service was themed: “Sacrifice Remembered, Strength Renewed.”

Sanwo-Olu characterised the annual remembrance as a “sacred pause” to acknowledge the men and women in uniform who stand watch under extreme conditions so that citizens can live without fear.
“Every day we wake up to normal routines… someone is watching the night so others can sleep,” the governor remarked. “Their duty goes beyond profession; it is a calling rooted in discipline, courage, and selflessness.”
He expressed profound gratitude to the fallen heroes whose names “may not always be spoken” but whose sacrifices are permanently etched into the nation’s history.
Recognising the resilience of the families left behind, Sanwo-Olu assured them of the state’s enduring support and care.
This commitment was recently backed by action, as the governor donated ₦100 million to the Nigerian Legion and provided utility vehicles and housing units to veterans and families of the fallen just days prior.
The governor also commended the armed forces for their evolving professionalism in supporting domestic safety, rapid intervention during national emergencies, guarding critical national assets and acting as a bridge across diverse ethnic and social lines.
Beyond honouring the military, Sanwo-Olu challenged Nigerians to play their part in sustaining peace through mutual respect and unity.
He argued that a “nation divided weakens its defenders,” while a united citizenry provides the strongest foundation for a secure country.

The Lead Pastor of Church Management Consult, Pastor Seyi Oladimeji, echoed these sentiments in his sermon, charging Nigerians to commit to lives of peaceful coexistence and responsibility.
The service, attended by high-ranking military commanders, members of the Nigerian Legion, and families of fallen heroes, concluded with solemn prayers for the protection of serving personnel and lasting peace across Nigeria.
