The Rivers State Police Command has ordered a full investigation into a tragic shooting incident in Port Harcourt that led to the death of a serving Police Inspector and left another injured.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 18 January, 2026, at a commercial facility in the Trans-Amadi area of the state, where police officers were deployed on joint security duty alongside military personnel.
The Force spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko on Monday confirmed that Inspector Ibrahim Sani, attached to 14 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Yola, lost his life after he was allegedly shot by a fellow officer, Inspector Victor Okus, who is attached to 17 PMF but was on special assignment at Onne. Another officer, Inspector Daniel Dauda, was also injured in the incident and is currently receiving medical care.
The suspect has since been arrested and placed in police custody.
Preliminary reports indicate that the shooting took place during duty hours, prompting immediate efforts to save the injured officers.
Inspector Sani was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Port Harcourt, while his colleague remains under medical observation. The remains of the deceased officer have been deposited at a military mortuary pending further procedures.
Reacting to the development, the State Commissioner of Police (CP) Olugbenga Adepoju, directed a thorough and transparent probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident. He assured that internal disciplinary processes would be followed, alongside legal proceedings, to ensure accountability.
The police authorities disclosed that the suspect will undergo an Orderly Room Trial and will subsequently be charged to court in line with established procedures.
The Commissioner further cautioned officers on the handling of firearms, stressing that the use of service weapons demands discipline, caution and a constant awareness of the safety of colleagues and the public.
The Rivers State Police Command expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased officer, as well as to his colleagues, and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, responsibility and justice within the force.
