The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed an incident on the Trans Niger Delta Pipeline (TNP) and has assured residents that the situation is under control.
While confirming that the facility is operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), the police disclosed that two individuals have been arrested for questioning regarding the incident.
The command stated that the event occurred on Monday night and reiterated that there is no immediate threat to residents or the environment.
Investigation Ongoing, Cause of Fire Unclear
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Rivers State Command, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, made this known in a statement on Tuesday.
She did not confirm whether the incident was caused by a militant group or whether the fire resulted from an explosion or an oil spill that later ignited.
According to Iringe-Koko, a surveillance team in the area first observed the fire and promptly reported it to SPDC operators. She assured residents that there is no further threat.
Official Police Statement
In the official statement, Iringe-Koko said:
“The Rivers State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that a fire incident occurred at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC)-operated Trans Niger Delta Pipeline, located at the border of Kpor and Bodo communities.
During a routine night patrol, security operatives observed the incident and promptly alerted SPDC management. The latter initiated necessary safety protocols, including shutting down the affected pipeline. As a result of swift intervention, the situation is now under control, and there is no further threat to residents or the environment.”
She also confirmed that the police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and to rule out any possible act of sabotage.
Two Suspects Arrested for Interrogation
Iringe-Koko disclosed that two individuals have been taken into custody for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
“The Rivers State Police Command has commenced a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire. In connection with this, two individuals have been taken in for questioning as part of efforts to uncover any potential act of sabotage.
The Command remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators of criminal activities are identified and brought to justice.
We urge residents to remain calm and vigilant, assuring them of our unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. The Command will not relent in its efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and maintain peace and security for all.”
