The Rivers State Police Command has clarified the details of an encounter between Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju and officers at the Nkpolu Division on 20 March.
The clarification came after reports that allegedly distorted the facts of what happened during Adepoju’s security tour in Port Harcourt.
The incident occurred at Mile 3, Diobu, where officers from the Nkpolu Divisional Police Headquarters were conducting a “stop and search” exercise.
The officers were following Adepoju’s earlier directives to tighten security for the Sallah celebrations, according to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer CSP Grace Iringe-Koko.
As opposed to claims that the officers failed to recognise Adepoju because he was dressed in civilian clothes, the Command clearly stated that the team identified and saluted him.
The statement read:
“The officers of Nkpolu Police Division who were conducting stop and search in compliance to directive of the Commissioner of Police to ensure adequate security for the Sallah celebration recognized and saluted the Commissioner of Police upon sighting him even while he was on mufti contrary to insinuation and misinformation that the officers did not recognize the CP.”
The visit was part of a routine tour to check on security measures across the state. And, during the interaction, Adepoju advised the officers to remain polite when dealing with the public.
He warned them against unprofessional behaviour and spoke with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to ensure the team was positioned safely and effectively.
The Rivers State Police Command also noted that Adepoju shared similar information with other officers stationed at “worship centres” and major locations throughout the state.
These visits allowed him to personally assess the security situation during the festive period.
The Rivers State Police Command finally assured that it is still committed to protecting lives and property.
