President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday extended his congratulations to Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), as he marks his 60th birthday on January 8.
In a statement signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised Kyari as a “shining example of the ideals of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Tinubu commended Kyari’s contributions to Nigeria’s energy sector, emphasising his commitment to creating new opportunities and ensuring the sector’s growth and sustainability.

“Kyari is a shining example and embodiment of the ideals of the Renewed Hope Agenda. I commend his commitment to creating new opportunities and ensuring the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s energy sector,” said President Tinubu.
The President also highlighted Kyari’s role in transforming NNPCL into a profitable organization, noting his leadership during the resuscitation of two refineries, an increase in domestic natural gas consumption, and a rise in oil production to 1.8 million barrels per day.
Tinubu expressed appreciation for Kyari’s dedication to service and professionalism, not only in his current role at NNPCL but also throughout his distinguished career at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
The President also prayed for Kyari’s continued health, wisdom, and strength, urging him to continue mentoring the next generation of energy sector leaders in Nigeria.
Kyari, who assumed his role as the Director General of NNPC in July 2019, turns 60 on Wednesday, which is the typical retirement age for many public agency heads.
His tenure, however, remains a topic of conversation due to speculations about his potential extension or replacement.
