Football fans across England are complaining about the hike in ticket prices by Premier League clubs amidst the UK cost-of-living crisis which has been on for three years. The Football Supporters Association (FSA) are at the forefront of a call for a reversal of the trend. The campaign under the tag “Stop Exploiting Loyalty” is focused on getting Premier League clubs to consider the fans’ economic plight.
A coalition of fan groups all over the league is planning to converge and protest at different match venues in the league over the next two weeks. This is after fans of Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United staged a joint protest against the clubs’ ticket costs when they met last weekend.
A group of Tottenham supporters known as Save Our Seniors group point out that the £3 million the club saved from removing senior concessions is the same amount paid in annual bonus to the club’s chairman Daniel Levy. On the other hand, West Ham supporters have berated the club’s attitude in trying to make fans believe they have to pay more for tickets so that the team can be more competitive.
Only Crystal Palace have not increased ticket prices in the Premier this season, maintaining its previous rates, according to the FA. The group further claimed that there has been an average of seven per cent increase in ticket prices, with concessionary tickets costing higher. The chairman of the group Tom Greatrex said, “The Premier League and its clubs really need to listen to this message – clubs must cherish and reward supporter loyalty rather than exploit it. Fans feel clubs often care more about attracting one-off visitors who’ll pay through the nose for a ticket while spending fortunes in the club shop when they should be looking to reward those who go week in, week out, win or lose.”
