The Anambra State Police Command has begun a full-scale manhunt for the unknown gunmen who launched a deadly attack near the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area, on Sunday, leaving several persons feared dead.
Residents said the assailants stormed the busy junction in the evening and opened fire indiscriminately, causing panic as people ran for safety.
Some victims were reportedly killed on the spot while others sustained life-threatening injuries.
A community source said the gunmen “invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing a lot of people,” adding that the motive behind the attack remained unclear.
Eyewitnesses described the assault as “commando-like,” noting that the attackers arrived suddenly and began shooting without warning.

Video footage circulating online shows terrified residents fleeing as bodies lay in pools of blood across the scene.
The President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, confirmed the incident in a statement, describing it as a “senseless act of violence” aimed at disrupting the peace of the community. He said relevant security agencies had been alerted and investigations were under way.
“I strongly condemn this heartbreaking incident,” Okoye said. “I appeal to all Ndi Nawfia to remain calm, stay vigilant, and continue to cooperate with security operatives as they work tirelessly to restore normalcy.”
While the Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached for confirmation, a senior police source said officers had already commenced investigations and were working to track down the perpetrators.
“We condemn these heinous acts and assure the public that we will do everything possible to bring the culprits to justice,” the source stated.
The community remains tense as security personnel intensify efforts to uncover those behind the attack.
