The Nigeria Police Force has defended the recent arrest and detention of activist Omoyele Sowore.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
Adejobi refuted claims of torture and unlawful imprisonment, noting that Sowore was taken into custody for “criminal offences such as forgery, cyberstalking, and other infractions” following credible intelligence.

He clarified that Sowore’s arrest was conducted in full compliance with legal procedures and that he was released on bail within the constitutional 48-hour limit.
Adejobi noted that Sowore is fully aware of the charges against him and is expected to appear in court to face the accusations.
Addressing the widespread reports of torture, he denied any mistreatment.
Adejobi also addressed a viral image of Sowore with a bandaged arm, clarifying that the bandage was on him before his arrest.
According to him, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun ordered an internal investigation into how Sowore had access to the bandage while in custody, especially since he repeatedly refused to be examined by medical teams sent by the police on August 7 and August 8, 2025.
He claimed these refusals are documented and stated that Sowore’s continued detention is not arbitrary and is based on a valid court remand order.
Adejobi urged the media and the public to be more diligent in their reporting, accusing some of sensationalising the matter due to personal vendettas against the police leadership.

He reaffirmed the police’s unwavering commitment to the protection of human rights, respect for the rule of law, and the pursuit of justice without fear or favour.
“No individual—regardless of their status, influence, or social media reach—is above the law. Further updates on this matter will be provided as investigations proceed per due process”, Adejobi noted.
