Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested seven suspected cultists allegedly terrorizing the Ijebu-Ode area of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Omolola Odutola, said the suspects, identified as members of the Aiye Confraternity, had been on the command’s watchlist for various cult-related activities.
The culprits are named as; Towolawi Omotayo, Balogun Ibrahim, Nkechi John, Mustapha Aliu, Opeyemi Rasheed, Mustapha Sikiru and Oshodi Oluwaseun.
Odutola said the suspects were nabbed during a sting operation on Thursday by operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team.
She added that the alleged cultists were involved in robberies, housebreaking, and illicit drug use.
The PPRO said, “The SWAT team received intelligence that members of the Aiye Confraternity, also known as the Black Axe cult group, who had been on their watchlist for a long time, were spotted along Ogbo on Ijebu-Ode Road.
“Acting on this information, the SWAT team was dispatched for action, leading to the arrest of seven suspects. A search revealed exhibits including a cut-to-size, locally made, single-barrel gun, seven live cartridges, and a handheld axe.”
Items recovered during the operation include a cut-to-size locally made single-barrel gun, seven live cartridges, and a handheld axe.
Odutola added that investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other suspected members in the area.
