Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has praised Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their record-breaking triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
In a statement released on Monday titled “MISSION V ACCOMPLISHED,” Obi applauded the team’s exceptional achievement in clinching their fifth consecutive title, calling it a powerful symbol of resilience, teamwork, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit.
“Congratulations, D’Tigress! You’ve once again proven yourselves as the undisputed queens of African basketball,” Obi declared. “Your victory is not just a win for Nigeria, but for the entire continent. To dominate this tournament five times in a row is no small feat – you’ve etched your names in history.”
Obi lauded the players for their tenacity, energy, and unity on the court, describing them as “fearless, fast, and unstoppable.”
“Thank you for pouring your hearts into every game and showing the world the strength of Nigerian excellence. Your effort, courage, and unity were truly exceptional,” he added.
Special commendation was also given to Head Coach Rena Wakama, whose leadership, Obi said, had been pivotal in guiding the team to their unprecedented victory.
“To coach Wakama, thank you for your vision, discipline, and championship mindset. You’ve led these amazing women with grace and determination,” he stated.
D’Tigress secured the 2025 title after a commanding performance against Mali in the final match held on Sunday, 3 August, at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
This latest victory marks a historic moment in African basketball, as Nigeria becomes the first nation ever to win five straight AfroBasket championships—a record that solidifies D’Tigress’ status as the dominant force in the sport across the continent.
