Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has condemned the recent violent attack at Onitsha Main Market, Anambra State, which led to the death of several traders, including a pregnant woman.
In a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, Obi expressed deep concern over the incident, calling for a thorough investigation, a complete reorganisation of the security outfit involved, and strict accountability for those responsible.
New Daily Prime had earlier reported that a security team allegedly opened fire on traders in the bustling commercial centre, resulting in multiple civilian casualties.
“It is very worrisome that already state-backed outfits created to help with the security situation are instead worsening the plight of the already terrorised citizens and sometimes acting even worse than the criminals they were meant to confront,” Obi wrote.
He recalled a previous case involving another local security group, the Udo Ga-Achi Security Outfit, which was accused of brutally assaulting a youth corps member in the state. He noted that the latest killings reflect a disturbing trend of impunity among such groups.
Obi insisted that all security outfits operating within the state must be properly scrutinised and held to lawful standards, stressing that they must not be allowed to act outside the law.
“We must have outfits that are well-scrutinised and do not operate outside the law,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor also offered his condolences to the families of the victims, stating, “My deepest sympathy goes to the families of the victims. May they find strength and comfort and may the departed rest in peace.”
Obi’s comments come amid growing public outrage over rising incidents of extrajudicial killings and abuse by local security outfits across the country. Many are now calling for urgent reforms to restore public trust and ensure civilian protection.
