Governor of Abia state, Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party (LP), insisting he is still a card-carrying member of the party that brought him to office in the 2023 governorship election.
Speaking against the backdrop of recent defections by opposition governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Otti noted that while political realities can change, his current position remains unchanged.
The governor made the remarks during his monthly media briefing, where he addressed questions surrounding the ongoing leadership dispute within the LP.
“We are on the right side. We have maintained that Abure’s tenure has expired, and we went to court, which affirmed that,” he said.
“So, the court judgement confirmed that his tenure has expired and advised people to obey court decisions to save the courts from unnecessary troubles.
“We are not in an election period. If an election comes, we will still run under the Labour Party, but nobody knows tomorrow. But today, I am still in the Labour Party.”
Otti’s position aligns with a recent ruling of the federal high court in Abuja, which recognised the Nenadi Usman-led national caretaker committee as the legitimate leadership of the Labour Party.
In the judgement, delivered by Justice Peter Lifu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was directed to recognise the Usman-led faction.
However, the Julius Abure-led group has rejected the ruling and announced plans to challenge the decision at the appellate court.
