Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has lamented that many Nigerian leaders enter politics without adequate preparation, contributing to the poor reputation of politics in the country.
Speaking at the 2nd Annual Daniel Taiwo Odukoya Memorial Lecture held at The Fountain of Life Church in Lagos on Saturday, Osinbajo said this lack of readiness has tarnished the image of politics not only in Nigeria but worldwide.
Despite the widespread disillusionment, he emphasised that politics remains the primary avenue for leadership and influence.
Osinbajo urged Nigerian youths to engage actively in politics, describing it as a crucial tool for shaping the nationโs leadership and achieving lasting transformation.
โPolitics has acquired a bad name, not just in Nigeria, but across the world. But the truth is, there is no other way to influence a nation except by engaging in the political process,โ he said.
โIf we are not involved in choosing leaders, shaping policy, or participating in political parties, then we forfeit our right to complain when outcomes donโt reflect our values.
โMany people go into politics with nothing, no plan, no knowledge, and end up achieving nothing. Leadership demands more.
โNigeriaโs transformation requires principled, informed, and active participation in the political space.
โThis nation is not beyond redemption. But change will only come when citizens, especially those with moral conviction and vision, step forward to lead,โ the former Vice President added.
