Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has called for national unity and urgent action to halt the rising violence in rural communities, following the recent massacre in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, where over 200 residents were reportedly killed by armed herders.
Visiting the grieving community, Ortom condemned the attack, describing it as “unprovoked and unfortunate,” and expressed deep sorrow for the loss of lives and the devastation caused to families.
“Our hearts are heavy with grief for the lives lost and the families devastated by this heinous act. We must stand together as a people and as a nation to ensure such barbaric acts are brought to an end,” Ortom said.
Ortom was accompanied by a high-powered delegation, including Dickson Tarkighir, member representing Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency, Ezekiel Adaji, Chairman of the PDP in Benue, former aides, and community leaders.

He urged federal and state authorities to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Highlighting the importance of intelligence gathering and community policing, Ortom called for proactive measures to prevent further violence.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for his recent visit to Benue and for directing security agencies to apprehend those responsible.
Ortom also thanked Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, for visiting the affected area and pledged his commitment to working with the federal government to fulfil promises made to the people of Yelewata.
