The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for continued efforts to achieve gender equality, stressing that it is crucial for fostering a peaceful, equitable society and driving sustainable development.
She made the call during her keynote address at the 2024 Gender Conference held at the University of Lagos on Tuesday, November 19.
Represented by Mrs. Maryam Obadina, Tinubu highlighted the importance of justice, equity, and empowerment in advancing societal progress.
“Gender equality is essential for achieving a peaceful and equitable society,” she declared, emphasising that empowering women is vital for economic growth and productivity.
Tinubu further noted that while discussions on gender often focus on equality, it is important to recognize that empowering women is not just a matter of social justice but also a key driver of economic progress.
“Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and potential. Empowering them is critical for productivity and economic growth,” she said.
Reflecting on her personal journey in politics, the First Lady shared the challenges women face, particularly in influencing policies and decision-making.
“I worked for 12 years in politics without having the numbers to influence policies directly affecting us. For instance, I couldn’t effectively oppose laws like child marriage, which severely impacts young girls,” she lamented.
Despite these challenges, Tinubu encouraged women to actively pursue opportunities and not wait for them to be handed over.
“Be bold, stay informed, and create your own opportunities. Hard work and faith go hand in hand,” she advised the audience.
The First Lady of Oyo State, Tamunominini Makinde, also delivered a goodwill message during the event, emphasizing that gender equality benefits both men and women.
“Gender equality is not just about women. A man can be a nurse, and a woman can be a pilot or a lawyer. It’s about having the opportunity to pursue your dreams irrespective of gender,” she stated.
Makinde further encouraged women entering male-dominated professions to prepare thoroughly.
“Ask yourself: How well do you know the field? Who has succeeded in it before you? What can you do better? These questions will help you build a solid foundation,” she advised.
The 2024 Gender Conference served as an important platform for discussions on advancing gender equality in Nigeria, with key stakeholders emphasising the need for sustained action to ensure equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender.
