The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has praised the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, describing him as a detribalised leader devoted to religious tolerance, harmony, and peaceful coexistence across Nigeria.
The remarks were made on Tuesday during a courtesy and solidarity visit by the Sultan and his delegation to the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, in Ibadan, Oyo State, according to a statement issued by Ladoja’s Chief Press Secretary, Chief Ayoade Olugbemiga.
Oba Ladoja commended the Sultan’s record as a military officer, diplomat, and religious leader, all of which were groomed in Ibadan. He urged other spiritual leaders to emulate Abubakar’s exemplary tolerance to help prevent religious crises in the country.
“I pray that other leaders, particularly religious leaders, learn from His Eminence’s commitment to peace and unity,” the Olubadan said. He also expressed gratitude for the Sultan’s prayers for his long life and continued reign.
Ladoja further acknowledged the Sultan’s role as Chancellor of the University of Ibadan in facilitating the appointment of the first Ibadan indigene, Professor Kayode Adebowale, as Vice-Chancellor of the institution since its establishment in 1948.
Earlier in the visit, the Sultan explained that his delegation, which included representatives from Nigeria’s six geo-political zones, came to pay homage to the Olubadan and express appreciation to the people of Ibadan for providing the land on which the University of Ibadan was built.
“We are here on a solidarity visit to our Chief Landlord to express our gratitude for not only giving us the land on which the University was built but also providing an enabling environment,” Abubakar said. He assured the monarch that the University would continue to seek his guidance and support when necessary.
The event drew a host of dignitaries, including members of the Sultan’s entourage, top management of the University of Ibadan, traditional rulers, and the President of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Chief Ajeniyi Ajewole.
On November 17, 2025, the Olubadan encouraged the Sultan to continue promoting religious tolerance nationwide. The Sultan was accompanied to the palace by the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Lawal, and leaders of the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria, including Rasaki Oladejo, Deputy President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.
The visit underscored ongoing efforts to strengthen interfaith dialogue and cooperation in Nigeria, highlighting the critical role of traditional and religious leaders in fostering national unity and peace.
