The Ogun State Police Command has assured residents of Ajebo community in Obafemi–Owode Local Government Area that there is no imminent security threat, despite a viral video circulating on social media alleging that herders were planning an attack on the area.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Command said its investigation had found no evidence to support the claims, stressing that the public should remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified rumours that could cause panic.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, ordered the immediate deployment of the Command’s tactical teams, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, to conduct an intelligence-led assessment of the area. The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Amotekun Corps, So-Safe Corps, Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), local hunters, and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN).
According to the police, the operatives discovered that the Fulani settlers in Ajebo were not recent or hostile migrants, but long-standing residents who have coexisted peacefully with the host community for years. Officers reported seeing women and children in temporary shelters, with no arms, harmful objects or suspicious behaviour observed during the sweep.
No adult male was found in the settlement. Police explained that the men had travelled to neighbouring Oyo State for trading activities, consistent with their routine economic pattern. A further search revealed an extended RUGA camp that has reportedly existed for more than a decade.
The traditional ruler of the area, Kabiyesi Oba Rueben Oluwole, who is said to have authorised land allocation to the Fulani residents, has been invited for clarification. Similarly, the Baale of Alapako, where another cluster of huts was identified, has also been summoned for a meeting with the Commissioner of Police.
Security agencies have maintained a precautionary surveillance presence in the forest stretch situated about 10 kilometres from the main community. Police emphasised that the presence of tactical teams was purely preventive and not in response to any verified threat.
The Ogun State Police Command reiterated its commitment to proactive intelligence gathering, urging citizens to remain vigilant but avoid amplifying unverified security alerts.
“The public is assured that robust intelligence measures are already in place to guarantee safety,” the statement added.
